Tata Motors first unveiled their compact hatch under the name of Zica an acronym derived from Zippy Car. But by the end of 2015 the Zika Virus had reached pandemic levels across the Americas. In a bid to disassociate with the name Tata Motors on February 22, 2016 renamed the Zica to Tiago. The name Tiago was chosen amongst the final three entries of Tiago, Civet and Adore.
The name Tiago was christened after successful crowd sourcing activities were conducted through the #Fantastico Name Hunt. The company received more than 37,000 suggestions within three days of the campaign. Tata motors also announced the winner of this campaign – Mr. Libi Thomas whose entry matched the name Tiago. The Tiago has been designed for young car buyers, boasts of trendy design, features and driving dynamics. The company plans to launch the new Tiago by the end of March this year.
Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors, said, “We are delighted with the response and support we have received from our well-wishers across the globe through the Fantastico Name Hunt campaign. We are proud to announce the new name - Tiago for our next new hatchback. We have begun working towards launching this stylish car and are determined to place it in the market addressing all relevant needs of the target audience.”
